Software Engineer - Robotics

Location: Peterborough I Salary: Dependant on experience

OAL is growing, and we’re looking for an experienced Software Engineer to join our Robotics team in Peterborough.

This is an opportunity to develop software that does more than sit behind a screen. Working primarily with C# .NET and JavaScript, you’ll build applications and services that form part of OAL’s robotic automation systems, connecting robots, PLCs, vision systems and wider factory systems within real-world production environments.

Working closely with our Robotics team and as part of a wider cross-functional engineering environment, you’ll contribute throughout the full software development lifecycle – from engineering and development through to deployment, commissioning and ongoing support.

You’ll have the opportunity to see the software you build operating as part of complete robotic systems on customer sites, while developing your technical capability and contributing to the continued improvement of OAL’s Software and Robotics teams.

The role will see you balance your time across project engineering, customer support and your own professional development, according to the needs of the team and wider business.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll be involved across the full lifecycle of our software and robotic automation projects. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Contributing to project engineering activities throughout the full software development lifecycle, in line with the OAL Way

  • Designing, developing and maintaining C# .NET applications and services that coordinate and monitor robotic cells and associated equipment

  • Developing JavaScript-based user interfaces and tools for operators, engineers and customers

  • Integrating software with robot controllers, PLCs, vision systems and wider factory systems

  • Working closely with Automation, Robotics, Mechanical and other engineering disciplines to deliver complete solutions

  • Delivering software solutions on time, to specification and within budget, in line with agreed project goals

  • Attending customer sites to deploy, commission and support robotic systems within live production environments

  • Assisting with customer support tickets in accordance with SLA commitments

  • Providing remote technical support to field-based colleagues

  • Maintaining high-quality documentation for software solutions and support processes

  • Participating in regular technical reviews and promoting software development best practice within the team

  • Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives across the Software and Robotics teams

  • Taking part in training and development activities to maintain and grow your professional and technical competencies

It’s a varied role combining software development, project engineering, commissioning and technical support, giving you the opportunity to follow the solutions you develop from initial engineering through to operation in a live manufacturing environment.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for a capable Software Engineer who enjoys solving technical problems, writing high-quality software and collaborating with different engineering disciplines.

Essential experience and skills

You’ll need:

  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in software development roles

  • Commercial experience developing applications using C# .NET

  • Commercial experience developing with JavaScript

  • A BSc in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field

  • A full UK driving licence

While you'll be working within robotics and automation, you don't need to already be a robotics expert. If you're a strong software engineer who is interested in applying your skills to robotics, automation and smart manufacturing, we'd be keen to hear from you.

It would be great if you also have

Experience or knowledge in any of the following would be an advantage:

  • Industrial food manufacturing environments

  • Integrating software with industrial robots and robotic cells

  • Beckhoff PLCs and TwinCAT

  • Python

  • MSSQL

  • Azure DevOps

  • Agile methodologies

Why OAL?

At OAL, the software you develop has a visible, real-world impact.

Rather than working solely on traditional software applications, you’ll develop solutions that interact with robots, machinery and production systems, helping manufacturers automate and improve their operations.

You’ll work alongside engineers from a range of disciplines, giving you exposure to robotics and industrial automation while continuing to develop your core software engineering expertise.

We value people who share ideas, identify opportunities and challenges and look for ways to continuously improve what we do. You’ll be joining a collaborative environment where delivering for our customers means working together to get projects completed correctly, on time and within budget.

As OAL continues to grow, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your expertise, contribute to technical best practice and play a part in shaping the future of our software and robotics capability.

If you're a software engineer looking for the opportunity to take your C# .NET and JavaScript experience into the world of robotics and automation, we'd love to hear from you.
